The Law of the Seed
Many books have been written about the process of manifesting, or consciously creating the life you want. The popularity of such books, videos and recordings is testimony to the importance of the subject and the fascination the public has in learning these secrets. This is a good thing, for learning the principles behind manifesting is an important aspect of the spiritual awakening of individuals and of humanity.
Manifesting is the bringing into your environment or sphere of reality the conditions your heart desires. We all do this unconsciously from our early years because the basic principle of manifesting, and the reason it works, is that your life is shaped by your mind and your mind always tends to focus on what your heart desires. This fundamental psychological truth is universally recognized. And the reason it works is the profound truth that what we think about we draw into our lives. The inescapable fact is that, on a long enough timeline, our thinking crystallizes into the reality of our lives.
Every human being is naturally creative. We are constantly creating each moment of our lives by virtue of our thoughts and feelings as well as by our actions. It’s true that the creations of most people don’t amount to very much, for they have not learned to tap into the inexhaustible powers at their disposal. In some cases, this is a good thing, for many people might only stir up mischief for themselves and others if they truly understood their innate powers.
Yet the truth is that we are creative spirits by nature. Not only do we have the power to fashion our lives, but the circumstances in which we currently find ourselves have been created by the thoughts and feelings we have previously entertained, albeit often unconsciously.
This fundamental life truth has been stated by the great world teachers since the dawn of time. In the words of Gautama Buddha, “Your life is shaped by your mind; you become what you think.” Jesus said, “As you sow, so shall you reap.” This is a statement of the fundamental law of life and of nature, what some have called “the law of the seed.” We are always planting seeds in the garden of our minds in the form of thoughts and feelings, desires, and intentions. These inner mental and feeling impulses lead to action and become the driving forces that create our life circumstances.
Another way of stating this universal law is that your inner life of thought and feeling creates your outer world of environmental circumstances. Harmonious, loving thoughts create a similar external outcome. This is true for mean, cruel or insensitive thoughts, for they also create like effects. If you want strawberries in your garden, it does no good to plant thistles. The kind of seeds we sow, determine the harvest. And by the action of reciprocity, what we wish for others we wish for ourselves.
Years ago, I heard someone say that “The entire universe rearranges itself to fit your picture of reality.” This has a nice ring to it but is not entirely true. Our opinion of the law of gravity, for instance, will not the change the operation of this law. We may think that the sun moves around the earth, but our misperception will not affect the movements of these heavenly bodies. The fact is that the larger universe in which we find ourselves – the macrocosm, or greater whole, – is the creation of higher beings Our personal opinions, our "picture of reality,” will not alter the universal laws. What is true is that we fashion our personal universe into the image of what we carry habitually in our own minds and hearts. It is a truth of great significance that we are the shapers of our own personal destinies. Thus, it is accurate to say that our personal world gradually rearranges itself to fit our picture of reality. For this reason, if you persistently and consistently think in terms of love and goodness, your external world will gradually shape itself into a harmonious reflection of these positive, loving emanations.
In summary, every mental cause creates a material outcome or effect. What we think about and desire with intensity we draw into our lives. We can never escape the effects of our own thinking. The emanations of our inner life create impressions in the subtle enter around us and draw people, events, and circumstances that have an affinity with our inner life. That is why, Emerson – perhaps America’s greatest philosopher – said, “Great hearts continually emit those mysterious forces that draw great events.” – Emory Michael
